Buckless in Baku

The October holidays are upon us here in Scotland and rather than our usual vacation (staying at home in Edinburgh...), we are off to Azerbaijan!  I know, it is an unusual choice for a holiday destination and that it sounds none too thrifty!

My parents are living out here in Baku, while my Dad is working for a local company, and they invited us to come and stay for a week.  I hummed and haa'd over whether to visit or not.  My parents were offering to pay for our flights and as we will be staying with them, there would be no accommodation costs either, but there are always incidentals and sundry items to buy while you are away.  Having just been given money by my parents for a new, much needed, security system for my house, I was also wary about being even more indebted to them.

On balance, we decided that it would be a good opportunity for JW to come out and try to drum up some business in Baku, so he is paying for his stay via his business and is consequently working while he is here, (he is on the phone talking very loudly as I write!)  We also thought it would be a really good opportunity for our 16 year old son to come out and experience a different culture and that it would be a better way for him to spend his holidays, rather than playing on the computer all day.

So we are here and I am trying not to revert to a small child again, though it is difficult!  JW goes away in the morning, with the cash, and I am with my mum all day, who is paying for lunches and coffees and won't here of me paying for anything.  We just managed to pay for the groceries today!

I have just been getting acclimatised so far by spending a couple of days wondering around the centre of town.  So, we will see what tomorrow brings.
